The Building Block Fallacy
نویسنده
چکیده
Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are increasingly used for such purposes as deriving programs 1] and producing designs for robots 2]. According to the building-block hypothesis and schema analysis of Holland 3] the GA is an eecient search method. However, empirical work has shown that in some cases the method is outperformed by simpler processes such as random-permutation hill climbing 4] and 5]. The present paper reexamines Holland's framework (as formulated by Goldberg 6]) and nds that such in-practice failures are predictable given the implications of the schema analysis. The high eeciency of the GA method is commonly attributed to itsìmplicit parallelism', i.e., its ability to develop candidate solutions in parallel, without focussing on any particular solution at any one time. However, this eeciency is hard to realise because there is a deep contradiction between the building-block hypothesis and the schema theorem.

Grouping and gambling: a Gestalt approach to understanding the gambler's fallacy.
The gambler's fallacy was examined in terms of grouping processes. The gambler's fallacy is the tendency to erroneously believe that for independent events, recent or repeated instances of an outcome (e.g., a series of "heads" when flipping a coin) will make that outcome less likely on an upcoming trial. Grouping was manipulated such that a critical trial following a run of heads or tails was g...
متن کاملStudy of thermal performance of building roofs in the city of Tehran
The design of a building can provide the highest thermal comfort in the interior without any mechanical equipment and save energy to a large extent. The roof of a building is an important part for thermal loss. This research studies the thermal performance of 14 conventional roof structures in Tehran city by using designbuilder 4.5. It is found that the polystyrene block performs best compared ...

There are different views concerning the meanings of the most important ethical concepts such as the goodness and the ugly. The author of this article while classifying various views and explaining them, tries to make a critical study of those views as well. Accordingly, first he goes on to examine critically the theory of emotionalists as one of the most important non-cognitive theories. Th...

Addressing the issue of energy in contemporary Iranian architecture is very important at all stages of planning, design, construction and operation, and the effort to coordinate and interact with the environment is always one of the foundations of sustainable construction. On the other hand, much of the citychr('39')s surface is composed of worn-out areas with high levels of energy consumption....
متن کاملEffective energy consumption parameters in residential buildings using Building Information Modeling
Building information modeling can help in predicting the energy efficiency in future based on dynamic patterns obtained by visualization of data. The aim of this study was to investigate the effective parameters of energy consumption using BIM technology which can evaluate the buildings energy performance. First, three forms of general states in the building were modeled to evaluate the propose...
